Cooling Refrigerants of the Future. An air conditioner or heat pump relies on its refrigerant to cool and dehumidify the air before it’s sent back through your home. This liquid is housed within the coils of your home’s cooling system, but one of the most common refrigerants used for many, many years – the R-22 (Freon) is now being phased out because of environmental concerns. In fact, this phase-out was mandated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through the Clean Air Act. By 2020, R-22 will no longer be in production. Introducing R-410A Recognized by the EPA, R-410A is a chlorine-free and ozone-friendly refrigerant. This means it will cool your home without damaging the environment. Even better news, Lennox’s most highly efficient systems are engineered to use this AC refrigerant, which can help your system perform efficiently. The same Lennox systems are known for durability, quiet operation and improved dehumidification, so you can stay comfortable. Additional Considerations At Falls Mechanical Services LLC in Great Falls, our cooling products can work with R-410A. If your system was installed before 2010, you may want to consider replacing your cooling system now, before R-22 is hard to find. Some manufacturers sell alternate refrigerants such as R-407C, R-438A and R-422, however, they may not work with an R-22 AC or heat pump and could compromise your system’s performance.
