Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

When winter hits and we start receiving calls about furnaces that aren't creating heat, a lot of them can be linked back to the lack of furnace service and maintenance. If furnace problems are not handled, your system may suddenly stop running and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a few warning signs you can look out for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system quits working.

Furnace Age

The typical life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's a safe bet to start furnace shopping now. Selecting a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make on the fly. Give yourself plenty of time to look through and weigh all of your choices.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they age and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been appropriately maintained. Imagine the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be going towards purchasing a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last couple years of a furnace's life are when your system incurs the most breakdowns. Begin adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the last two years - a new system may be more cost efficient.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any odd sounds coming from your system? Furnaces start making weird noises around the end of their lifespan. If your furnace is cycling on and off frequently or blowing cold air, it's time to think about getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home efficiently. Your home could start feeling stuffy and any family members with allergies could notice increased symptoms. Some other red flags are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
